Delight in the Word

On Sunday, we returned to our series in the book of Mark. Throughout our series, we have been considering who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him. In Mark 13:1-13, Jesus instructs His disciples to faithfully follow Him to the end of the age.

When discussions about the end times arise, it is common for people to respond in various ways. Some respond apathetically, a few arrogantly, and others fearfully. Jesus does not advocate for any of these responses. Though Jesus’ disciples wanted to know how and when the end will arrive, Jesus did not find it necessary to respond with an order of events. He acknowledges that destruction, deception, disaster, and persecution will come. Therefore, His followers ought to be faithful witnesses and enduring servants.

It is easy to get caught up in our daily routines and ambitions and forget that this world is ultimately not our home. One day, this world as we know it will come to an end. Praise God, it will be replaced by a new creation (Revelation 21). The things of this world, good and bad, will soon come to an end, and we will see the Lord. Therefore, we should not cling to the things of this world. Further, we can find hope knowing that the troubles, calamity, and persecution that we endure now will soon come to an end. Rather than being fearful about the end, we can trust that God will work out all things according to His good plan, which He has determined from the beginning (Isaiah 46:9-10).

How should we live for Jesus in the days ahead? Jesus instructs us to be alert and to be watchful. After all, we do have an enemy who seeks to devour us and a world that desires to persecute us (John 15:20; 1 Peter 5:8). Jesus also instructs us to faithfully endure every opposition and reach every nation with the gospel. Whether we face death or dirty looks, let’s be people who serve Jesus. Let’s engage others around us and proclaim the good news of Jesus before the end comes. May God help us serve Him well and preserve us as we persevere for Him.
