Resurrection Sunday

[ Matthew 28:1–20, Mark 16:1–8, Luke 24:1–53, John 20:1–21:25 ]

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:5)

Early Sunday morning the sun rises on two women headed out to Jesus’ tomb to anoint his lifeless and broken body with spices. Mary and Mary get to be the first to experience the greatest surprise in history. Jesus isn’t there. Instead of the dead body of their beloved Lord and friend, they find a large stone rolled away from the entrance of an empty tomb. “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” a man dressed in lightning asks them. “He is not here, but has risen.” As the reality of his world-altering words sinks into their ears, overwhelming sorrow and mourning are washed away with waves of astonishment, trembling, fear and joy.

Jesus is alive. Light has pierced the night and shattered the darkness. Death has been defeated. Jesus is victorious. With his resurrection, Jesus loudly shouts the guaranteed and glorious future of all who trust in him. Satan is disarmed. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation and lives now with indestructible hope. God is making all things new.

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!
Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!
